After a long summer of holidays, sunshine and sea swims, your jewellery deserves a little TLC. Sunscreen, sand, salt water and everyday wear can all dull the sparkle of your favourite pieces — but with the right care, they’ll look as brilliant as the day you bought them. Summer is well and truly over for 2025 and here's how to keep your post-summer routine simple...
Simple home care tips
-
Clean gently at home: Use a soft polishing cloth to lift away fingerprints and everyday oils.
-
Warm water wash: A bowl of warm (not hot) soapy water and a soft toothbrush is perfect for diamonds, sapphires, rubies and gold. Avoid soaking softer stones like opals or pearls as these can become lack-lustre with excessive or harsh exposure to chemicals and detergents!
-
Store smart: Keep pieces separate in a lined box or pouches to avoid scratches and tangling. (Especially those pesky fine chains and pendants with highly polished surfaces.)
- Silver will need extra attention because it is likely to oxidise over time, which simply means it will become dull or darken in appearance, specially if stored in open air. To slow the oxidisation process, store your silver pieces separately and in a closed jewellery box.
When to book a professional clean & polish
If your jewellery still looks cloudy, stones feel loose, or claws catch on fabric, it’s time for a professional check. Our in-house jewellers use specialist equipment — including ultrasonic machines — to safely restore your pieces.
🕒 Book a clean & check (2–3 weeks turnaround).
Lucy's story:
This year, I finally decided to go ahead and get it repaired and I am SO glad I did. The service from Hymans was class and the repair was done perfectly. They are so friendly in there and I felt completely at ease. It was also really affordable which is a win.
Thank you guys so much. I’d 100% recommend them if you're looking for a fast, professional service.
Protect: Keeping Jewellery Safe for Years to Come
-
Avoid chemicals – Perfume, hairspray, chlorine and cleaning products can all damage metals and stones. Put jewellery on last when getting ready, and take it off before swimming or cleaning.
-
Mind the activities – Remove rings and bracelets before gym sessions, gardening or heavy lifting to avoid knocks, scratches and misshaping.
-
Insurance & valuations – For high-value pieces, keep your insurance up to date. We offer professional valuations to ensure you’re covered if the unexpected happens.
-
Regular checks – Even the strongest settings can loosen over time. A quick annual inspection at Hymans gives peace of mind that your stones are secure. We don't charge to check over your jewellery for you- we'll always be happy to take a look and offer advice if you need it.
✨ A little care goes a long way — clean, store and protect your jewellery to keep it sparkling all year round. And when it needs that extra shine, we’re here to help. Pop in anytime for advice or book a professional clean — we’d love to see you!
