Moody Antique & Gothic Pieces for Late-Autumn Looks 🕯️ 🔮 🌕

As the nights draw in, jewellery with a darker edge comes into its own. Think black enamel, deep onyx, bold signet rings and the subtle sparkle of old-cut diamonds—perfect for layering with autumn knits or adding drama to an evening outfit.

What to Look For

  • Black Enamel & Onyx – Rich, inky stones and enamel detailing give a striking, timeless appeal.

  • Signet Rings – From classic family crests to minimalist ovals, they carry heritage and a touch of mystery.

  • Old-Cut Diamonds – Their softer sparkle feels romantic and unmistakably antique.

Our Favourite Find

Origin story of a favourite piece: 1857

A customer recently brought in a striking Victorian mourning brooch, its presence heavy with memory.
The piece—crafted in pinchbeck, a gold-toned alloy prized for its warmth—dates to 1857. Around the oval frame runs a band of deep black enamel, punctuated by a halo of tiny seed pearls, a symbol of tears. Behind the small crystal window lies a single curl of hair, mousy brown streaked with grey, suggesting the keepsake of an older woman. The back is delicately engraved: MG Died Dec 2nd 1857.”

During the mid-19th century, Britain’s fascination with death was profound. After Prince Albert’s death in 1861, Queen Victoria herself wore black for forty years, inspiring a culture of elaborate mourning. Hair jewellery became both memorial and art: a tangible way to keep a loved one close when photography was rare. Pinchbeck and black enamel allowed jewellers to create affordable yet dignified pieces that complied with strict mourning dress codes.

Holding this brooch today is like opening a small door into that world—where grief was not hidden but worn proudly, a quiet declaration of love and remembrance that still resonates more than 160 years later.
